PRESIDENT BUSH”S “ STATE OF THE UNION”
Jubilant, Relaxed and Celebratory
On the
evening of February 2, 2005, President George W Bush gave
his second State of the Union address. He was able to show
his most positive characteristics while winning admiration
from even some of his detractors as well as basking in the
elation of his supporters.
“Freedom”
was his theme again, as in the Inauguration Speech (see previous
article below).
Entering
the Congressional chamber visibly more comfortable than at
any other previous time, the President introduced and completed
his talk by referring to democracy, elections and the desire
for individual independence and liberty. If the Iraqi Election
participation had not been so impressive just a few days previously,
the mood would have instead been tense. Bush knows he has
to convince the American people, and others around the world,
that the contentious Iraq war has been worth fighting in spite
of its toll on his own popularity, our American military,
and our international standing.
JUPITER
(planet of expansion, good luck and optimism) ruled the day.
JUPITER had just STATIONED (appeared motionless) in the sky,
making its strongest impact. JUPITER also stationed at exactly
the same degree and in the same sign as JUPITER’s position
in Bush’s own personal chart. This is what is known
as a “JUPITER RETURN”. Whoever experiences a Jupiter
Return feels as though he has the angels on his shoulder for
that period of time. Things usually feel good and go right,
unless there are extreme contra-indications in the chart.
JUPITER’s
celestial “Station” also fell in the sign of LIBRA,
the sign most associated with a desire for peace and reconciliation.
Harmony is a key value of the sign of LIBRA. As discussed
in previous articles Bush’s birth chart benefits from
a close JUPITER-MOON conjunction in LIBRA, indicating a mellow
and fortunate side of his character along with the good fortune
of a generally supportive family. It also shows the very genial
side of his temperament.
The dangers
which JUPITER’s influence can encourage are over-optimism
or over-expansion, therefore making one less realistic. However,
this moment of Bush’s triumph was well-deserved, if
not endure. JUPITER’s “Station” occurred
at the point of RETROGRADATION (apparently motionless in the
sky). One meaning of a Retrograde period can indicate a period
of withdrawal into a more internal expression of Jupiterian
energies, but the Retrogradation can also withdraw some of
the benefits, being less favorable than a STATIONARY motion
before moving FORWARD. In other words, some positive influences
are reduced, but a pause in the potential excesses of a JUPITER
influence can be reduced while and a period of reassessment
be beneficial.
As well
as what has been discussed above, JUPITER is associated with
generosity, with International Relations and cross-cultural
issues. The astrologer, Lynn Koiner, associates JUPITER (as
well as SAGITTARIUS, the sign Jupiter “rules”
or is most associated with) as indicative of role-playing.
JUPITER is Zeus, the King of the Gods, who could change his
form at will and yet no one outranks the President in the
United States. Bush performed in his most regal and generous
role, not showing that “edge” which has so disconcerted
both his supporters and detractors.
JUPITER
represents the broad view, so that although a “laundry
list” expected in a State of the Union address for the
domestic agenda was included, many more details and implementation
of goals is next on the agenda.
Of course,
most of the State of the Union address covered the extremely
ambitious domestic agenda for which the President is fighting,
especially in these first two years of his second administration.
Nonetheless, not even President Reagan pulled off the theater
of having the Iraqi woman (whose father had been killed by
Saddam and had just voted for the first time) in a mutual
embrace with the parents of suffering parents of a soldier
who had died in the war in Iraq.
For readers:
every one of us experiences, and hopefully enjoys a “JUPITER
RETURN” (look it up or ask your astrologer). One generally
experiences a period in time in life when we feel a burst
of renewal, of faith, of a desire for adventure, a readiness
to embark explore some new territory in our personal lives.
For example, Bill Gates, at twelve years old, experienced
his first JUPITER RETURN when he was first introduced to computers.
We can’t all be Bill Gates, but we all do get a chance
at some form of renewal and growth every twelve years when
JUPITER returns to its original position in our birth charts.
Astrological
note:
The State
of the Union address was given on a “Void Moon”.
This generally indicates that whatever is planned may not
occur or that whatever it said doesn’t really make much
difference once way or the other. However, in the President’s
chart there are two positive indicators. The Transiting MOON,
late in the sign of SCORPIO was approaching a trine to his
birth chart SATURN. And at the same time, his personal Progressed
MOON (view
chart) closely trines his Progressed Saturn, bringing
a period of emotional stability and increased structure to
daily life.
