JUSTICE O'CONNOR, THE SWINGING SUPREME

(Note that in this article there is no exact birth time. No person's chart can be completely understood without the exact time and place of birth. It is also important to remember that an astrological chart never encompassess the totality of an individual.)

Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court and has been the determining vote in many 5-4 decisions. Some people speak of her as the most powerful woman in the United States. She was appointed by President Reagan, but has proved in her role as a Justice to be of careful deliberation and independent mind.

Her birth chart (view chart) indicates that she’s a practical idealist (SUN-NEPTUNE conjunction in VIRGO), grounded with the discipline of a powerful SATURN in CAPRICORN. Emotionally, she is oriented towards partnership and collegiality (MOON in LIBRA). Typical of a MOON in LIBRA person, she enjoys close and equal partnerships and in fact has celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary. With three planets in LIBRA, she values fairness, justice and balance. Her MERCURY-MARS square shows her incisive mind.

O’Connor has six or seven out of her ten planets in CARDINAL signs, demonstrating her action-oriented personality. Intrepid, she survived breast cancer while serving on the Court. She is a multi-talented and multi-faceted woman - an athlete, author and enthusiastic dancer.

Astrologically, Justice O'Connor's birth chart has numerous fascinating connections with the USA chart (view chart). In addition, her progressed chart (see astrological note 2 below) indicates close connections to the charts of both Bush and Kerry.

In the election of 2000, her role was pivotal in George W. Bush becoming our President. In 2004, with the electorate so intensely divided, and lawyers already at work in many battleground states, one wonders whether the Supreme Court could again be involved in determining this election. For the good of the country, it would be preferable to have a clear winner on Election day but this may not be the case. Both the election and inaugural charts indicate potential doubt and confusion.

Astrological Notes:

1. O’Connor’s SATURN moved into direct motion in her early teens, increasing the likelihood of eventual career success.
2. A progressed chart shows the additional development of a person at a certain point in his or her life.
