TROUBLING TIMES: Charts of the U.N., Kofi Annan, the U.S.
and President Bush
The United
Nations (view chart)
is coming under double fire. An international panel has been
studying ways to re-structure the Security Council and streamline
the bloated and inefficient bureaucracy. Simultaneously, some
members of the U.S. Congress have been calling for the resignation
of Kofi Annan (view
chart) while his son has been implicated by the Media
as part of the corruption in the Oil-for-Food program in Iraq.
It is
time to bring the power balances more up-to-date in the U.N.,
a body which was created immediately after World War II. The
U.N. membership has increased from 51 nations in 1945 to 191
in 2004. The mission of the U.N. has also changed. It was
originally formed to prevent attacks from one or two countries
against others, and the focus was on the recent aggressions
of Japan and Germany. Now the U.N. is more concerned with
trying to maintain stability within nations, lead peace keeping
efforts, and deal with world hunger and AIDS.
The U.N.
(view chart) is now
59 years old and experiencing a "SATURN RETURN".
For a person, a SATURN RETURN (at approximately ages 28-30
and again at 58-60) describes a time period when the individual
re-evaluates his or her chosen path, making decisions in both
private life and career about whether to continue or change
major life patterns and paths. You might have noticed how
many government officials over the last few years have retired
from or re-committed themselves to public service around the
ages of 58-60. To an astrologer, it has seemed quite startling.
An obvious
personal example is the painful SATURN RETURN of President
Bush (view chart).
At age 59, he has faced a reality check about what he and
the world at large have created during his first term of office.
He has committed himself to pressing forward on his chosen
agendas during his second term. What different emphases may
develop remain to be seen, and much of what happens is certainly
not under his personal control.
There
are two extremely obvious astrological indicators showing
on the charts of the United Nations and of Kofi Annan. The
U.N. SATURN RETURN was already discussed above. The second
astrological indicator which fairly "screams" out
trouble and a temporary diminution of esteem for the institution
of the U.N. is the passage of the transiting SOUTH NODE over
the SUN on the U.N. chart. For a person, the passage of the
SOUTH NODE over the SUN indicates a weakening of Ego and confidence.
For the U.N., the passage of the SOUTH NODE indicates a very
vulnerable period for the institution and its leader.
When
a person is the President of an organization such as the U.N.,
or of a country such as the U.S., that leader "personifies"
that organization. The U.S. has had a painful period of reassessment
during this period of President Bush's SATURN RETURN. And,
at the U.N., not only the institution has come under unpleasant
scrutiny but so has its leader Kofi Annan.
Currently,
JUPITER (the planet of public attention) impacts both the
charts of the U.S. (view chart)
and of Kofi Annan (view
chart) in similar ways. Kofi Annan has a SUN-SATURN opposition
in LIBRA-ARIES. He is a man of sensibility and diplomacy (LIBRA)
who has worked hard and been very disciplined (SATURN in ARIES)
in creating his own life. In the U.S. chart, JUPITER impacts
the SUN-SATURN square, a primary indicator of the American
image of the "self-made man". Both the SUN-SATURN
opposition and SUN-SATURN square are descriptors of struggle.
President Bush is urging an agenda which rewards personal
responsibility. Kofi Annan, while confronting an attack on
his organization, is simultaneously dealing with an attack
against him personally as well as upon his son.
Last,
but far from least, all four charts - U.N., the U.S., Bush
and of Kofi Annan, are being affected by PLUTO, the ultimate
power planet. PLUTO, in the sign of SAGITTARIUS (philosophies,
ethics and international affairs) has been, and continues
to be over the next couple of years, in a challenging opposition
to the MOON (people or membership) of the U.N. at 22 GEMINI
and the U.S. MARS war planet at almost 22 Gemini.
Only
the dedicated astrologer wishes to follow all these astrological
inter-relationships. However, to everyone, we are obviously
in at critical time of intense struggle and this is clearly
shown on these astrological charts. It's not hopeless; it's
just difficult.
Astrological
notes:
(1) A
"SATURN RETURN" means that the motion of SATURN
in the sky has returned to the same sign, and for a shorter
period of time, the same zodiacal degree in the heavens, that
SATURN occupied at the time of a person's birth, therefore
at the same placement SATURN occupies in the birth chart.
(2) Kofi
Annan and the U.S. have NEPTUNE, the planet of idealism but
also potentially of confusion and deception, at the same degree
of NEPTUNE in VIRGO. This close connection is one indication
of the stresses of the Iraq war.
