Chapter Four

AMERICA: A HOROSCOPE FOR A NATION

As mentioned earlier, in ancient times a country did not have its own chart; a country's horoscope was represented by the king's or ruler's chart. Although modern astrologers still study the charts of Heads of State, they also erect a chart for a nation based upon the precise time a country came into being by formal declaration.

While astrologers often disagree over which chart is best to use for the United States, we are using the chart for the Declaration of Independence (view chart). This chart has historically been commonly used throughout the United States*. July 4, 1776, was officially the day of our independence as a country. We celebrate that day as our national holiday, and, for most of us, it represents not only the anniversary of our independence but also our ideals and our pride in our nation.

Just as a person's chart describes his basic character, and then evolution of his life, so does a nation's chart describe its fundamental characteristics and evolution. There is a special branch of astrology, called Mundane astrology, which studies the charts of nations, politics and world events. Although the meaning of the planets, signs and houses is similar in a nation's chart to their meanings in an individual's chart, they are not identical. The archetypal energy is the same, but the expression is sometimes slightly different.

For example, for a person and a nation the Sun represents the primary identity. However, while the Sun in an individual's chart may also represent the father or authority figure, in a nation. s chart the Sun would represent the President or Head of State. While the Moon in a person's chart represents the individual's emotional response patterns, for a nation's chart, the Moon represents the masses and the mood of the people as a whole.

In the chart of the Declaration of Independence, we can see a planetary pattern which expresses the aspirations and ideals of our nation. We can see many of our outstanding national characteristics, our gifts as well as our demons. We can discover themes, clues, and connections that define us both as a nation and a culture. We can also find a greater understanding of our history and gain insight into what may lie ahead.

In the astrological imprint of the chart, we can see our bountiful natural resources represented by the Sun in Cancer. A society based on democratic ideals and the voice of the people is described by the Moon in Aquarius. The Ascendant in Gemini reveals a nation divided - north from south, black from white. After looking at some of the essentials of the chart and various special features, we'll review a few critical astrological times from our past and look into our future. We'll also begin to explore how Bill Gates, O.J. Simpson, and Oprah Winfrey tie into the chart of the U.S. and the themes of the times.

Note:
*Since September 11, 2001 the hour of this chart has been increasingly challenged although many still use it.
